A Cell Phone Adventure

Cell phones are staples of life here in Malawi, ironically, especially in the villages where there is so little technology. Cell phones are a lifeline from the remote areas, but they present challenges to maintain in those areas. Cell phones are “prepay.” That means that one purchases the phone and then continually purchases “units” in the form of cards with scratch-off pads, holding a number entered into the phone to have “air time.” The challenges in the village are first the ability to…See More

Who Do We Entertain?

I left my office a bit early for lunch the other day to run an errand that should have taken about five minutes. I needed to stop at St. Michael’s and All Angels cathedral to get a few pictures of the stained glass windows for a talk I’m giving the next day at Zomba on architecture and worship. The church is between my office and my home, so it was on the way. The building was open. I went in and set about snapping the shots I wanted. As I was finishing, I noticed a young couple had come into…See More

Tidzalerana

Michael is an 18 year old autistic, deaf fellow who shuns begin touched. He grew up in Ndirande, one of the poorest townships in Blantyre. He is malnourished and shows signs of having been physically abused in the last months since his father died and he had been living with an elderly grandmother in a village out of Blantyre. Hopefully life is about to take a better turn for him. I met him the day after he moved into the Tidzalerana Shelter. He is one of seven who are now living at…See More

A Motor Bike's Impact

My son Thomas found himself in a difficult but all too familiar a place for Malawian pastors – great distances to travel to serve his congregations. He was assigned 6 churches and 14 prayer houses to serve – 20 congregations. Because of housing issues, he is living in a rented house 26 kilometers from his nearest congregation and 92 kilometers from the furthest. This distance was to be traveled with a pedal bike. That meant that he had an all day bike ride to get to his furthest congregation.…See More

Dear Friends,

This will be my last entry at thie blog address. Ning is moving to a fee based structure and I have found a free site that is quite nice. I invite you to join me at http://kay-daysdiary.blogspot.com. Malawian Dogs

Dogs in America are pets. Dogs in Malawi are guard dogs. Dogs in America are pampered, cuddly creatures, regardless of their size. Dogs in Malawi are tough, fierce creatures, for the most part. I have never wanted a dog in Malawi since they are not what I am used to or what I enjoy. I like American dogs. I have been adamant about this.…

Colonialism

One of the great shames of the northern hemisphere is its history of colonialism – that is the practice of domination, which involves the subjugation of one people to another. Or put another way, it is a policy by which a nation maintains or extends its control over foreign dependencies. One focus emphasizes domination, the other…
